I’ve been quiet on Medium for the last year because of other projects taking up my writing time for stories on this platform. One of those big projects has been compiling a collection of my short stories over the last decade. Echoes of Convergence launches May 21, 2025, and to celebrate, I thought I’d include an excerpt from one of my favorite stories, The Adaptation of Instinct. I hope you enjoy it, and pick up the book (on Amazon at launch) for 32 short stories, six of which aren’t found anywhere else. Thanks for your support, and stay tuned for details on how to purchase your copy.
An excerpt from The Adaptation of Instinct, found in Echoes of Convergence (2025) and initially published in the anthology We Are Dangerous (2023).
“Captain Summers, you need to take a look at this.” June Yoshida beckoned Mitch Summers over to her console.
Mitch pulled his gaze away from their latest system survey and let the memory of his father fade away. The thrill of exploration kept him going, but the paperwork and bureaucracy of it all often made his mind wander off. It’s why he left the Earth Alliance Academy in the first place. Although if he were being honest with himself, his work ethic had less to do with his departure than his inability to stay in line and check his impulses at the door.
